The History of CBD and Cannabis

For such a tiny molecule, CBD has captured a ton of attention in recent years. While decades of cannabis prohibition may lead some to assume that the idea of the therapeutic benefits of CBD are a recent discovery, that’s far from the truth.

Like many cannabinoids, the origin story of CBD begins in a lab. In 1940, Harvard-trained chemist Roger Adams successfully extracted CBD from cannabis. Then, in 1963, Professor Raphael Mechoulam uncovered the chemical structure of CBD and documented it. The efforts of these two men have coined them the “Godfathers of cannabis research”.

Mechoulam’s team of Israeli scientists sought to discover whether or not CBD contributed to the psychoactive effects of Cannabis. In 1970 the team concluded that CBD was not a psychoactive compound, but that it may have other potential uses. It wasn’t until the 1980s that research into CBD as a potential therapeutic aid began to pick up steam. It was during this time that breakthrough research on epilepsy revealed CBD’s potential as an anti-epileptic.

Turns out, people have been unknowingly using CBD for thousands of years. The use of hemp as a food source and for ritual, religious, social and ceremonial purposes dates back more than 5,000 years.

  • 2737 BC Chinese Emperor Sheng Neng used a cannabis-infused tea to aid with a variety of ailments including memory, malaria, rheumatism, and gout.
  • In the 1700s, American medical journals were actively promoting the benefits of cannabis, presenting it as a treatment for a variety of health issues.
  • Siberians and Mongolians were believed to be harvesting and growing cannabis plants in 12000 BCE. In fact, archaeologists widely agree that the cannabis Sativa plant was the first plant to be cultivated during the birth of agriculture.
  • 1450 BC – cannabis proponents believe that the Book of Exodus references that “holy anointing oil” is potentially made from cannabis.
  • Queen Victoria is believed to have used CBD to alleviate menstrual cramps during her reign, which ended in 1901.

Those are just a few of the many examples of its use in the past. ttps://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/historical-timeline/

Throughout history, cannabis had served as a valuable therapeutic resource; however, during the rise of modern medicine, it was not recognized by most in the medical community due to a lack of scientific evidence.
CBD’s path to Federal Rescheduling has been a long and windy road. Finally changing with the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill offered support, legal security and stability for the nation’s hemp farmers. For the first time ever there was a bill that legalized the regulated cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and hemp-derived products (such as CBD), so long as the hemp contained less than 0.3 percent THC. With the “gray” area of Federal scheduling restrictions still in place, CBD still has a ways to go, yet everyday we are that much closer to the common availability of cannabinoids across the board.
